What is AEO? A plain-English guide for local businesses
Short answer: Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content and business information so AI assistants and search features can find it, understand it and use it in their answers. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it.
Why AEO has become a thing
People increasingly get answers without clicking: Google’s AI features, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and voice assistants summarise information and sometimes name the businesses they drew from. If your business is the clear, well-documented answer to a question, you have a better chance of being mentioned.
For a local business, the questions are usually practical: “Which dental clinics in LB Nagar are open on Sunday?”, “How much does a website cost in Hyderabad?”, “Is Google Ads or SEO better for a new salon?”
How AEO differs from SEO
Traditional SEO aims to rank a page. AEO aims to be quoted or summarised. In practice the foundations overlap heavily: crawlable pages, helpful content and a trustworthy business. AEO adds emphasis on direct answers, consistent facts and clear structure.
What actually helps
1. Answer the question first
Open important pages with a one or two sentence answer, then explain. That “short answer” pattern is easy for both people and machines to lift.
2. Keep your business facts identical everywhere
Your name, address, phone number, services and hours should match across your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories. Conflicting details make it harder for any system to be confident about you.
3. Use structured data correctly
Organization, LocalBusiness, Service and Article markup state facts in a machine-readable way. Mark up only what’s true and visible on the page.
4. Write from real experience
Generic content is easy to replace with a generated summary. Specific pricing factors, local observations, process details and examples from your own work are what make a page worth citing.
5. Cover the follow-up questions
Think about the next three questions a customer asks after the first one, and answer them on the same page or link to where you do.
What AEO can’t promise
No one controls what an AI system says. AEO improves your odds; it doesn’t guarantee mentions, and the tools change quickly. That’s why it should sit on top of solid SEO and local SEO, which still drive most measurable enquiries.
A quick AEO checklist
- Each service page starts with a clear definition or short answer
- Business details match across the website, Google and social profiles
- Valid Organization / LocalBusiness and Service structured data
- FAQs that reflect real customer questions
- Pages that show who you are and why you’re qualified to answer
